DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE PEUTINGER TABLE IS?

This section of the Peutinger Table, "Pars I: Hispania, Britannia (Segment I)," offers a schematic representation of the ancient western provinces of the Roman Empire, specifically the Iberian Peninsula and the British Isles. The elongated shape of the table reflects the distinctive style of the Peutinger Table, which sacrifices spatial precision to emphasize the connections between urban centers and stations along the Roman roads.

The segment shows the extensive road network that crossed Roman Hispania, connecting important cities. The main communication routes are highlighted with conventional symbols to indicate inhabited areas, rivers, and mountains. Britannia, depicted in the upper right, is also shown with its main cities and routes, albeit with a stylization that makes it very different from the actual geographical shape of the islands.

The color and structure, with the stylized details of the coasts and islands, highlight the practical function of the document: a travel instrument rather than a map in the modern sense, an exceptional testimony to the Roman road culture.
