This painting, made by the artist during his stay in Naples, shows a detail of Piazza Palazzo, crossed by wayfarers and townspeople. On the left stands a large palace, which Vanvitelli portrays in oblique perspective. The palace casts its great rectangular shadow over the square. The handling of light in the painting is very accomplished. A lighter version of the canvas exists, with the opposite perspective.
