The artwork
A rare 18th-century depiction of Padua, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the Piovego River, crossed by several small boats. On this side of the riverbank there are scenes of daily life and a rural landscape. Padua unfolds, with its palaces and churches beyond the bank; the sky is clear, cloudless on the horizon. The large tree toward the right of the painting, which seems to "watch over" the people at its feet, is to be noted. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1735.
The work is part of a private collection.
