Historical map of the city of Rome dated 1562 created by Antonio Lafreri. The map is an engraving and is one of the oldest maps of Rome.

The map highlights the historical walls of Rome, visible in the lower part, below which there is a legend of the streets and locations of Rome.

In addition to this information, the map also shows the distribution of Rome's districts in the mid-sixteenth century.

The map is part of a private collection.

Antonio Lafreri, or Antoine Lafréry (Orgelet, 1512 – Rome, 1577), was a French publisher active in Rome.

Among the greatest publishers of prints in Europe in the sixteenth century, Lafreri's name is mainly associated with the publication of the first known sales catalog of engravings, better known as the Index.

Feel history at your fingertips

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on precious Amalfi paper.

It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with the characteristic frayed edges that testify to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques, in the workshops of Amalfi.
