Historical map of the island of Malta from the late 17th century created by Frederick de Wit. It is an etching.

The map shows the island of Malta, outlined in yellow, in the center of the Mediterranean, with its mountain ranges and main settlements highlighted. In the upper right there is a legend. In the lower right corner there is a small map, a section representing a landing point in Malta.

The map is part of a private collection.

Frederick de Wit (formerly Frederick Hendriksz) was a Dutch cartographer and artist.

In 1648, during the period known as the Dutch Golden Age, De Wit moved to Amsterdam, one of the leading cities of the time. In 1654, he opened a shop and printing house called De Drie Crabben ("The Three Crabs"), named after his residence on Kalverstraat, a famous city street.

Feel history at your fingertips

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.

It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic frayed edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques in the workshops of Amalfi.
