A historical double-hemisphere map of the world created by John Speed. It is a colored engraving.

The map depicts the two hemispheres with the outlines of the continents as they were known at the time.

In particular, it also includes the division into parallels and meridians.

In addition to the hemispheres, allegories are depicted, the position of the Sun, Moon, and Earth during a solar eclipse (left corner), and the position of the Sun, Earth, and Moon during a lunar eclipse (right corner).

The map also contains Latin inscriptions and busts of navigators.

The map is displayed at the National Maritime Museum, London, UK.

John Speed (Farndon, 1552 – London, 1629) was an English cartographer and historian.

Speed, certainly the most famous of all British cartographers, is best remembered today as the cartographer whose maps depicting English counties are often found framed in homes across the United Kingdom.

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.

It is a paper composed exclusively of cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic deckled edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques, in the workshops of Amalfi.
