Historical double-hemisphere world map created by Frederick de Wit in 1705. It is a hand-colored engraving.

The map represents the world as it was known in the early 18th century. Both meridians and parallels are present. In addition to the two meridians, the two terrestrial poles are also depicted.

Outside the hemispheres, allegories taken from mythology and the classical world are depicted.

The map is part of a private collection.

Frederick de Wit (formerly Frederick Hendriksz; Gouda, 1629 – Amsterdam, July 1706) was a Dutch cartographer and artist.

In 1648, during the period known as the Dutch Golden Age, De Wit moved to Amsterdam, one of the leading cities of the time. In 1654, he opened a shop and printing house called De Drie Crabben ("The Three Crabs"), named after his residence on Kalverstraat, a famous city street.

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on precious Amalfi paper.

It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic frayed edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques in the workshops of Amalfi.
