The map depicts the Duchy of Brittany as it was known in the early eighteenth century. It shows the various counties that made up the Duchy, and the main settlements consisting of towns within the Duchy.

Frederick de Wit (formerly Frederick Hendriksz; Gouda, 1629 – Amsterdam, July 1706) was a Dutch cartographer and artist.
In 1648, during the period known as the Dutch Golden Age, De Wit moved to Amsterdam, one of the main cities of the time. In 1654 he opened a shop and printing house called De Drie Crabben ("The Three Crabs"), named after his residence on Kalverstraat, a famous city street.
