This extraordinary map of the Gulf of Venice and the Adriatic Sea, published by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli in 1688, is one of the most decorative and detailed representations of the region in the 17th century. The work is embellished with a large cartouche featuring 23 city plans in elegant medallions and numerous coats of arms, including that of the Republic of Venice prominently displayed in the upper right corner, with the famous Lion of St. Mark and the motto "Pax tibi Marce, Evangelista meus". More than a dozen additional coats of arms complete the composition, emphasizing the political and strategic importance of the area at the time.
The map was published at a crucial moment in Venetian history, at the beginning of the Morean War, when the Most Serene Republic was expanding its dominions at the expense of the Ottoman Empire. Coronelli, considered one of the most important Italian cartographers, combined scientific rigor, artistic talent, and profound culture. His career led him to work for dukes and kings, creating monumental globes that made him famous throughout Europe. This work fully represents his style: refined, symbolic, and perfectly in line with the prestige of the Republic of Venice.
