The map of the ancient city of Pesaro, created by Pietro Bertelli and included in the famous Theatrum Urbium Italicarum first published in Venice in 1599, offers a detailed and evocative view of this fortified city located in the Gulf of Venice. The engraving presents an accurate representation of the interior of the city walls, highlighting the urban structure with its streets, buildings, and public spaces. The city is illustrated with particular attention also to the river that flows through it, the bridge connecting it, and the adjacent seascape, with several sailing ships navigating the gulf, symbolizing Pesaro's commercial and strategic importance during the Renaissance.
The map is enriched by a decorative coat of arms, which gives the representation a symbolic and heraldic value, emphasizing the city's identity and autonomy. Bertelli's work, with its precise copper engraving and artistic printing quality, documents Pesaro's urban and defensive layout in the 16th century and represents it as an important cultural and maritime center within the context of Italian cities belonging to the Republic of Venice. The bird's-eye view allows appreciation of the relationship between the city, the river, and the sea, thus offering a historical and artistic testimony of great charm and value.
