Pietro Bertelli's map of the ancient city of Mantua is a detailed perspective view that forms part of the famous collection Theatrum Urbium Italicarum, first published in Venice in 1599. The engraving offers a striking bird's-eye view of the city, showing not only Mantua itself but also the surrounding lake, thus highlighting the relationship between the city and its natural environment. The representation is distinguished by its precision in depicting bridges, gates, and the robust fortified walls that protected the inhabited area, key elements in the urban organization of the period.
The map is embellished with two large coats of arms: one in the upper left representing the coat of arms of the Gonzaga family, historical lords of Mantua, and an oval one on the right with the profile of Virgil, the famous Mantuan poet, thus imbuing the view with both historical and cultural value. Printed on laid paper with excellent engraving quality, this image documents the city's structure and life in the 16th century and also celebrates Mantua's artistic and political importance within the context of Italian cities of the era.
