The work

The Madonna of Alzano by Giovanni Bellini, also called Madonna della Pera or Madonna Morelli (from the name of the last owner), was created around 1485-1490 and represents the Madonna and Child in an atmosphere of intense spirituality. The Madonna turns her meditative gaze to the Child, referring to the future sacrifice, but there is no typical tragic dimension. Indeed, the rural landscape behind the two characters conveys serenity, it is dotted with villages and other figures are visible, and is perhaps to be attributed to another painter. Bellini, master of the Venetian Renaissance, demonstrates remarkable skill in the use of light and color, giving the figures an extraordinary softness and realism.

In the foreground, a pear symbolizes the love between mother and son due to its sweetness, but also recalls the apple of Eden, prefiguring the redemption that the Madonna and Jesus will bring about. The pear element adds a symbolic and theological dimension to the painting.

The Madonna of Alzano is currently preserved at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, where it continues to be admired for its beauty and emotional depth.
