The work

The "Madonna of the Blue Diadem" is an oil painting on wood (58x44 cm) created by Raffaello Sanzio and Giovan Francesco Penni, dating back to 1510-1511, and preserved in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The painting depicts a Madonna of the Veil: Mary lifts a transparent veil to discover her sleeping son, prefiguring his tragic fate. The cross of San Giovannino also refers to the Crucifixion. The scene is rendered in an intimate and familiar tone, with Mary embracing John the Baptist, who smiles sweetly. The Sleeping Child recalls Michelangelo's famous "Sleeping Cupid".

The painting stands out for the plastic accent in the chiaroscuro drapery and the dynamic effect of the figure of Mary, with the veil inflated by the movement and the wind, supported by the blue diadem that gives the work its title. The background shows an open landscape with ruins and, in the distance, the outline of a city, probably Rome, with a classical temple. The composition of the painting is harmonious, with the Virgin at the center, and the blue, used in the Virgin's diadem and cloak, represents purity and divinity. The rich palette of glazed pastel colours, similar to porcelain, suggests the style of Penni's pupil.

The "Madonna del Diadema" evokes a sense of sacredness and infinite tenderness. The serene faces of the Virgin, Saint John and the sleeping Child, framed by the shining diadem, seem to emanate a divine light that envelops the viewer in a spiritual embrace. The vivid colors and the harmony of the lines convey an intense inner peace, while the sweet smile of the Madonna instills a sense of eternal and reassuring love. This sublime work is a hymn to celestial beauty and the purity of the human soul.
