The work

Raphael's Madonna of Alba is a Renaissance masterpiece created around 1510, it is a round painting that depicts the Madonna sitting on a trunk with the Baby Jesus and the infant Saint John. The Madonna wears a pink robe and a blue cloak, typical symbols of purity and royalty, holds a book in her hand, suggesting her wisdom and awareness of her son's fate.

The Baby Jesus, naked and in a playful attitude, interacts with the infant Saint John, who holds a cane cross, prefiguring the Passion of Christ. The two children and the Madonna look at the cross which is located between the infant Saint John and the Madonna and Child, thus creating a mutual tension between the characters represented.

The background features a serene and idyllic landscape, with hills, rural buildings and a blue sky. This setting gives depth and a sense of calm to the scene.

The composition is balanced and harmonious, with a triangular arrangement of the figures which gives stability to the work. Raphael's use of light and color is masterful and gives softness and realism to the figures.

The Madonna of Alba is an extraordinary example of Raphael's mastery of combining ideal beauty and religious feeling. It is currently preserved in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC
