Claude Monet's painting "Luncheon on the grass", painted between 1865 and 1866, is a work of great historical importance for understanding the dawn of Impressionism, despite remaining unfinished.

Monet's initial intention was to create a large canvas that could compete with Édouard Manet's famous "Luncheon on the Grass", exhibited in 1863 and which had caused great scandal.

Monet conceived his version as a modern outdoor scene, depicting a group of bourgeois friends enjoying a picnic in a forest clearing. Among the characters are key figures of the time, such as Camille Doncieux, Monet's future wife, and Frédéric Bazille, a painter and close friend. The artist worked extensively in large format, painting directly from life in the forest of Fontainebleau, an innovative approach for the time.

However, the work was never completed. It is said that Monet, in financial difficulty and perhaps disappointed by the initial reception or his own expectations, left the painting as a pledge to a homeowner. When he returned to retrieve it years later, he found it in very poor condition due to humidity and was forced to cut it into several pieces. Today, two large main fragments of Monet's "Lunch on the Grass" remain, preserved at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and a smaller fragment.
