The artwork
Rare 18th-century engraving of London with a detail of a bridge, created by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, using pen and ink with watercolor on paper. In the foreground there is the large, imposing bridge, with its large arches, some of which are still under construction in the middle of the river. On the left side of the painting there is a pier, with people and scenes of daily life. On the opposite bank, London can be glimpsed with its distant buildings. In the Thames, several small boats float downstream. The sky is cloudy, with a few dark clouds on the horizon.
The engraving is dated 1749.
