The artwork
Around 1478, Leonardo da Vinci designed an autonomous spring-powered chariot, not as a prototype for an automobile, but as a stage machine for theatrical performances. In the 15th century, public and private celebrations were grandiose events that required complex mechanical inventions for spectacular effects. Artists like Brunelleschi and Leonardo, masters of technical ingenuity, designed machines for dynamic stage sets.
Leonardo's chariot, with four wheels and a drawbar, was powered by two large leaf springs and a gear system reminiscent of a modern differential. Although impractical and requiring constant recharging, it introduced innovative concepts for energy storage and transmission. The invention fits into the tradition of self-propelled vehicles used for celebrations or military purposes, such as Francesco di Giorgio's hand-cranked chariots or Roberto Valturio's windmill, but stands out for Leonardo's mechanical ingenuity and pioneering vision.
