Legio XIV Gemina Martia Victrix was one of the longest-lived and most prestigious units of the Roman army, with origins in the late Republican era and an operational history that extended into the late Empire. The title Gemina indicated the merger of two legions reduced in number, while the epithet Martia Victrix, linked to the sphere of Mars, exalted its combative character and battlefield victories.
Recruited and reorganized in Octavian's sphere of influence after 41 BC, the XIV was initially employed in the civil wars and Gallo-Germanic campaigns, participating in operations on the Rhine under Drusus, Tiberius, and later Germanicus. With the invasion of Britannia in 43 AD, it followed Aulus Plautius and Claudius, distinguishing itself in suppressing the great revolt led by Boudicca (60/61), an episode that contributed to its reputation as a "martial and victorious" legion.
In the Flavian and Trajanic eras, it was transferred to the Danube, fighting against the Chatti, Dacians, Sarmatians, and other border peoples, with a permanent base at Carnuntum in Upper Pannonia. In 193, it supported Septimius Severus's ascent to power, marching on Rome and then intervening in the civil wars and Parthian campaigns, confirming itself for centuries as a faithful pillar of the Empire's Danubian defenses.
