The Tenth was the first legion personally raised by Caesar and has always been his most trusted one. The name Equestris was given after Caesar gave the legionaries horses as a strategy in a meeting with the German king Ariovistus in 58 BC, because he distrusted his Gallic cavalry auxiliaries, the Aedui.
Legio X was famous in its time and throughout history for its depiction in Caesar's Commentaries and for the prominent role the Tenth played in his Gallic campaigns. Its soldiers were disbanded in 45 BC. Those who remained were reconstituted for Mark Antony and Octavian, disbanded, and later merged into X Gemina.
