Legio VI Victrix was established by Octavian in 41 BC as a twin to the VI Ferrata, likely by recruiting veterans from Caesar's campaigns. It debuted in the siege of Perusia and fought against Sextus Pompey in Sicily, protecting vital grain supplies for Rome. In 31 BC, it participated in the Battle of Actium against Mark Antony and Cleopatra, contributing to the victory that paved the way for the Augustan principate.
Stationed in Hispania with the nickname Hispaniensis, it participated in the harsh Cantabrian Wars between 25 and 13 BC, consolidating Roman rule over the region. During the Neronian and Flavian eras, it operated along the Rhine, intervening in the suppression of the Batavian revolt and earning the honorary title of Victrix, "victorious."
In 119 AD, Hadrian transferred the legion to northern Britannia, where it replaced Legio IX Hispana at Eboracum (York) and participated in the construction of Hadrian's Wall. It remained there for a long time, supporting usurpers and emperors, until the progressive evacuation of Roman troops from Britannia at the beginning of the 5th century.
