Legio III Augusta was a long-standing legion, the heart of the Roman military in Africa for almost four centuries.

Founded in the late Republican era, probably in 43 BCE by order of Octavian and Consul Gaius Vibius Pansa, the III Augusta first fought in the civil wars alongside the future Augustus, perhaps as early as Philippi and then in campaigns against Sextus Pompey. From 30 BCE, it was permanently transferred to the African provinces, initially to Ammaedara and then to Lambaesis, from where it controlled the Limes against Numidian and Mauretanian tribes. Here, the legion not only faced major Berber revolts, such as that of Tacfarinas between 17 and 24 CE, but also promoted widespread Romanization through roads, aqueducts, and settlements.

In the 2nd century, it participated in external campaigns, from the Parthian fronts to the Marcomannic Wars, while maintaining its primary role as an African garrison. The crisis of the 3rd century saw it involved in fierce wars against desert tribes, in the suppression of the revolt of Gordian I and II, and in its subsequent disbandment and refounding with new honorary titles (Iterum Pia Iterum Vindex, then Aureliana, and finally Pia Fidelis). Still attested in the Notitia Dignitatum as Tertia Augustani, the legion remained active until the end of the 4th/beginning of the 5th century.
