The artwork
"The Last Day of Pompeii" is a monumental oil on canvas painting completed by Karl Bryullov between 1830 and 1833, and housed at the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. The work dramatically and chaotically depicts the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and the flight of the inhabitants of Pompeii. Bryullov's style combines the neoclassical plasticity of the figures with the emotional intensity of Romanticism.
The strong use of chiaroscuro and the dominant colors (the hellish red of the lapilli, the black of the ash, and the yellow of the illuminated bodies) emphasize the terror and desperation of the catastrophe. The painting achieved enormous international success, establishing Bryullov as a key figure of Russian Romanticism.
