A transcendent and original painting by Jakob Philipp Hackert depicting a landscape inside a grotto. Seated on some boulders are three young women (one wrapped in a towel), deep in conversation, while outside are two waterfalls. It is a painting with strong contrasts between areas of light and shadow on the rocks of the grotto. Note the vegetation growing between the boulders and the water of the little lake.
The painting is on display at the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia.
