An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Piazzetta San Marco, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is a detail of the Doge’s Palace overlooking the Piazzetta, while further back are the bell tower of San Marco, a detail of the Basilica and the other Venetian palazzi. The Piazzetta is thronged with people, visitors, nobles and Venetian citizens, and is lit by the setting sun. The sky is clear, but with a few clouds on the horizon. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. Canaletto created other variants of this painting.
