The work

22 June 207 BC: the consuls Gaius Claudius Nero and Marcus Livius Salinatore faced the Carthaginian army of Hasdrubal, Hannibal's brother, near Metauro (today's province of Pesaro and Urbino).

After a bitter fight, the legionaries win the battle and Hasdrubal's head is recovered and thrown into Hannibal's camp. Rome avoided the very dangerous alliance between the two brothers, who would certainly have marched on Rome.

It is said that Hannibal, having learned of the defeat, exclaimed: "Behold! Rome has triumphed. The war is lost forever".
