"La Japonaise" is an oil on canvas painting created by Claude Monet in 1876, during a period when interest in Japan, known as Japonisme, was widespread in Europe, particularly in Paris.
The work depicts Camille Doncieux, Monet's first wife, wearing an elaborate red kimono embroidered with samurai figures. The woman is portrayed in a dynamic pose, fan in hand, while her gaze is directed towards the viewer.
The kimono itself is a central element of the painting and testifies to the growing availability and popularity of Japanese objects in the Western market. The details of the embroidery, although not extremely precise from an ethnographic point of view, reflect the exotic imagery that surrounded Japan at the time. In the background, other Japanese prints can be seen hanging on the wall, suggesting a private collection or an environment where Japanese art was appreciated.
La Japonaise is more of a figure portrait, although the attention to the texture and color of the kimono maintains a connection to Impressionist sensibilities. The painting was exhibited at the Second Impressionist Exhibition in 1876 and received a mixed reception, partly because of its more traditional nature than other Impressionist works and partly because of its emphasis on the exotic.
