The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Rotunda at Ranelagh, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, during one of his journeys to London. The Rotunda is a large circular room that serves as a small piazza with scenes of everyday life, with a colonnade at its centre, also circular, enclosing a small temple. Prominent on the right of the painting is the canopy for the dignitaries. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1754. Canaletto painted three other variants of this picture.
