The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century painting with a view of the inner courtyard from the Doge's Palace, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the outline of the window from which the viewer is looking. Before his eyes opens part of the courtyard; Canaletto paints the building beside the courtyard in great detail, while in the background are the domes of St Mark's. The sky is cloudless; the painting, an oil on canvas, is undated.
The painting is on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge, UK.
