The artwork
At the turn of the 20th century, Claude Monet devoted himself to a series of paintings depicting the Houses of Parliament in London, capturing their essence in different atmospheric and light conditions.
These works, mostly produced between 1900 and 1904, were completed in the painter's studio in France, based on sketches and memories from previous stays in London.
Monet was fascinated by the fog and smog of London, which allowed him to explore the effects of light on form and color. In these canvases, the Gothic architecture of Parliament dissolves into a vibrant atmosphere, where the contours become more blurred and the colors merge, reflecting the changing conditions of the air and water.
