Claude Monet's painting The Thaw at Vetheuil painted in 1880, captures a moment of the harsh winter that hit the Vétheuil region of France.
That year, the Seine, which flowed near Monet's house, froze completely, blocking river traffic and isolating communities. This exceptional climatic event became the subject of a series of works by the artist.
The painting shows the surface of the river covered with sheets of ice and fragments of snow, with dull reflections of the winter light. The composition conveys the quiet and immobility of the landscape frozen in frost. There is not the brilliance or chromatic vivacity of many of his later works, but rather a sober rendering of the cold tones and grayish shades that dominate the scene.
