The artwork
An original, unique engraving of a funerary frontispiece, with a dedication from the son beside it, written in Latin, made by Lievin Cruyl with pen and brown ink and brush and grey wash over graphite. The frontispiece is drawn out of proportion and in the foreground, against Rome in the background with St Peter's Square and the other monuments. In this work Cruyl wants to capture the viewer's attention mainly on the funerary monument and its dedication, while the city is secondary.
