The artwork
An original and sophisticated painting of King Ferdinand I's coot hunt, painted by Jakob Philipp Hackert. The moment the arquebus fires is particularly striking. The hunter is at the shore, with boats in the background, while closer up, a hunting dog is swimming to retrieve the shot coot. The servant is prominently depicted holding the first catch, a coot, while two other dogs are diving into the lake to retrieve the bird.
The painting is exhibited at the Capodimonte Museum, Naples.
