A luminous and rare view of Devín Castle perched on its hill, by Bernardo Bellotto. From on high, the castle dominates the whole landscape and with its high walls seems impregnable. Further forward are scenes of daily life in a rural setting. A distinctive feature of the painting is the light effect of the morning sun, which gives the castle a special light.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Another variant of this work exists with a different intensity of colour.
