The artwork
An unusual and original mid-1700s view of the port of Messina from the Senate Palace, painted by Jakob Philipp Hackert. In the foreground, five merchants are negotiating the price of wooden planks for loading. Ships are moored at the dock, while dockworkers await the order to load the goods. The port dock is a small market. The painting highlights the difference in caste: on one side are the well-dressed and well-groomed merchants, on the other the dockworkers whose job it is to do the hard work.
The painting is exhibited at the National Museum of San Martino & Certosa in Naples.
