An unusual and original mid-18th-century view of the port of Messina from the Palazzo del Senato, by Jakob Philipp Hackert. In the foreground five merchants are negotiating the price of the wooden planks to be loaded. The ships are moored at the quay, while the dockers wait for the order to load the goods. The harbour quay is a small marketplace. The painting highlights the difference in class: on one side are the well-dressed, well-groomed merchants, on the other the dockers, to whom the hard labour falls.
The painting is on display at the National Museum of San Martino & Certosa, Naples.
