This work is a portion of the wall map of the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom, published in 1833 and engraved in Milan at the Military Geographic Institute of the Austrian General Staff. It represents one of the most advanced cartographic productions of its time.
The map shows a predominantly mountainous and hilly region, with a clear transition towards lower and possibly flat or coastal areas on the right. The left portion is dominated by very pronounced and dark mountainous relief, indicating significant mountain ranges, while the right side features gentler terrain, with less pronounced valleys and hills.
The depiction of the relief is particularly detailed and three-dimensional, achieved through accurate shading that lends depth and realism to the mountains and valleys. Numerous waterways are distinguishable, indicated by thin lines winding through the landscape. Many localities, villages, and cities are marked and named, suggesting a map with a high level of settlement detail. Roads or paths are hinted at, connecting the various locations.
The presence of vertical and horizontal lines crossing the map indicates a topographic grid or coordinate system, essential for a large wall map, which was often composed of several joined sheets. This allowed for greater precision in geographic positioning and distance measurement.
The production of a wall topographic map of such extent and detail underscores the Habsburg Empire's interest in having thorough and precise knowledge of its territory, for both administrative and military purposes. This map portion represents an excellent example of early 19th-century military and topographic cartography, a true treasure not to be missed.
