The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century depiction of a capriccio with a triumphal arch, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The splendid archway stands out, with a view of further arches at the back of the picture, and of other buildings and flights of steps. The complex is part of the gardens of a great villa. In the foreground is a distinguished onlooker, gazing up in wonder at the paintings of the archway. The sky is clear, with a few pinkish-white clouds, but the day is fine. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated.
The artwork is on display at the His Grace The Duke of Norfolk, Arundel Castle.
