The artwork
An original and luminous eighteenth-century representation of a capriccio, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is a bridge with two statues on either side, sinking into the canal. The details of a boat can be seen in the canal. On the opposite bank there are two rectangular Venetian palaces in different architectural styles. The sky is clear, but with a few clouds on the horizon, it's a beautiful day.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1742.
