Romantic and original eighteenth-century view of a capriccio depicting the entrance to the Capitoline Hill in Rome, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. The double arch at the entrance is particularly striking, with beggars at the foot of the columns. On the steps are citizens strolling, including one on horseback entering the gate. At the bottom of the steps is a large equestrian statue, and beyond it, the Capitoline Hill. The sky is clear, but there are a few clouds on the horizon. Mountains are painted in the background. The painting is dated circa 1743. Another version of this work exists, using different colors.
