The work
The subject of the painting is a young woman holding a green palm in her right hand, a symbol of Christian martyrdom. The woman wears a pink silk peplum tied over her shoulder and a blue turban that partially covers her auburn hair. His face has full cheeks, a pronounced jaw and a fixed, intense gaze. The light comes from the left and creates a strong contrast between the light tones of the skin and the dark tones of the background and dress. It is believed that the woman portrayed is Artemisia Gentileschi herself at the age of around 22, as her somatic features correspond to those of the Allegory of the Inclination preserved in Casa Buonarroti in Florence.
