A splendid, luminous painting depicting the Greek tomb of Phaethon, made by Jakob Philipp Hackert in 1785. Ideal for a collector. In the foreground on the right side is a large tree with a young girl at its foot who seems to be keeping vigil over the tomb of Phaethon. Further back is a river, with animals on its banks, and on the other side, on the height, a Greek temple. In the distance are softly shaded mountains blending into a sky lit by the early-morning sun, with lovely yellow reflections lighting up the whole scene.
The painting is on display at the Pushkin Museum, Moscow.
