The artwork
Between 1510 and 1511, Leonardo da Vinci created a detailed anatomical study of the shoulder and neck, focusing on the structure and superficial muscles. The work, now part of the Royal Collection, demonstrates Leonardo's profound interest in the science of the human body and his extraordinary ability for observation and representation. After passing from Francesco Melzi to Pompeo Leoni, it entered the English royal collection by 1690. This drawing is not only an artistic masterpiece but also a significant scientific study, anticipating modern anatomy.
It was exhibited in the exhibition "Leonardo da Vinci: The Mechanics of Man" at the Queen's Gallery of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where contemporary medical technology was used to compare Leonardo's Renaissance insights with today's scientific knowledge, highlighting his pioneering vision between art and science.
