The artwork
Leonardo da Vinci's "Allegory of the Boat, the Wolf, and the Eagle," created around 1516, is a chalk drawing with strong symbolic and political content. The work has been interpreted as a reference to the meeting between Pope Leo X and King Francis I of France, perhaps created to celebrate the marriage of Giuliano de' Medici to Filiberta of Savoy. In the drawing, the wolf represents the Pope or the Church, while the crowned eagle on a globe symbolizes the French sovereign or, alternatively, the German emperor.
Considered one of the earliest examples of political cartooning, the work demonstrates Leonardo's refined mastery of perspective and movement. The eagle emerges as a dominant and majestic figure, while the wolf appears weaker and more marginal. Unlike his scientific studies, this allegory reveals Leonardo's satirical and political side, a rare aspect in his artistic output.
