The frescoes of the Villa dei Misteri in Pompeii represent an authentic jewel of ancient Roman art. It is a moment of high-level painting which, despite its simplicity, based for example on the vivid contrast between the red background and the images, effectively represents ancient cults, mainly Dionysian ones or the initiations of young people into these mysteries.
The drapery is represented with great accuracy and the faces are also particularly expressive. The so-called "Pompeian red" dominates, which creates an atmosphere of concentration on the images and which guides the viewer to focus on the story told by the images. It is extraordinary how, despite the centuries that have passed, the colors of the frescoes have remained perfectly brilliant.
