The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Grand Canal during a regatta, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. It is the day of the Redentore, all Venice is celebrating and the Grand Canal is full of colourful boats. The sky is clear; in the foreground, in the middle of the Grand Canal, is a red gondolino. On the right of the painting one can admire a palazzo with red drapes hanging from the balcony. The sky is clear and the day is ideal for the festival. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated about 1740. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
