An original and rare engraving depicting a pilgrim praying before a wayside shrine, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is a pilgrim, in an attitude of reverence before a shrine found along a winding road that will take him up a hill. After his prayer there will be the bridge to cross, joining the two banks separated by a stream. Further back, on the other hill, is an ancient ruin in the form of an arch. The sky is slightly cloudy. The engraving is undated. Canaletto created other variants of this work.
