The artwork
An original and rare view of the old moat of the Zwinger in Dresden, by Bernardo Bellotto. The navigable moat is prominent, with high embankment walls on the left. In the background are the palaces of Dresden, while on the right a balustrade overlooking the moat can be seen. The sky in the background has heavy clouds, while it is paler and softer in front of the observer. The painting is dated 1749. It is one of the 14 views of the city of Dresden that Bellotto painted during one of his stays. There is another, similar work with a colour variant of this painting.
