The artwork
From the edge of a cliff a few travellers lean out to look at the sea, where white sails glide by and, far away, Mount Fuji appears. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- The blue of the sea, the white of Fuji and the dark rocks of the pass.
- A view that opens up the wall, perfect in a living room or an entrance hall.
- A gift for anyone who loves the sea, the mountains and Mount Fuji.
It is one of the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, the series that made Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), the best loved landscape artist of Japan, famous, published between 1833 and 1834. The Tōkaidō was the great road that linked Edo, today's Tokyo, with Kyoto, the city of the emperor, and for long stretches it ran along the sea.
After the station of Yui the road climbed to the Satta Pass, a narrow path overhanging Suruga Bay. It was a dangerous stretch, but it offered one of the finest views of the whole journey: Fuji seeming to rise out of the water, with sailing boats below. Hiroshige shows it as travellers saw it, from above, clinging to the mountain, and cuts the scene diagonally with the rock face to make us feel the drop. Our reproduction comes from the impression in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
In a living room or an entrance hall it brings the breath of the sea. A gift for anyone who loves Fuji.
