The artwork
"Woman in the Garden" by Claude Monet, painted in 1867, is a work that belongs to the initial period of the painter's artistic research.
The painting, currently kept at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, depicts a female figure, presumably Jeanne-Marguerite Lecadre, Monet's cousin, immersed in a garden.
The work is set in Sainte-Adresse, a place where Monet spent the summer of that year, dedicating himself to painting landscapes outdoors. The lady's light dress stands out against the green of the garden, which appears lush and permeated by sunlight.
This study of light and its interactions with the surrounding environment, while not yet fully impressionist, marks an important step in the direction that Monet would later take with greater determination.
