Monet's painting Wisteria is part of a series of works dedicated to this subject, created mainly between 1919 and 1920. These canvases represent a late phase in the artist's production, in which his attention was increasingly focused on subjects derived from his garden at Giverny, in particular water lilies and, indeed, wisteria.
Monet had a deep interest in the effects of light and color on water and vegetation, and wisteria offered him a new opportunity to explore these themes. Unlike water lilies, which float on the water, wisteria is a climbing plant that creates cascades of flowers and leaves, offering a different perspective for studying color variations and shapes.
The wisteria works show a tendency toward greater abstraction than some of his earlier work. The artist focused on rendering masses of color and texture, rather than detailed representation. The brush strokes become freer and more gestural, as if to capture the movement and vibrant energy of the light filtering through the dense vegetation.
