Monet's painting entitled Wisteria is part of a series of works devoted to this subject, made mainly between 1919 and 1920. These canvases represent a late phase of the artist's output, in which his attention focused increasingly on subjects drawn from his garden at Giverny, in particular the water lilies and, indeed, the wisteria.
Monet had a deep interest in the effects of light and colour on water and vegetation, and the wisteria offered him a new opportunity to explore these themes. Unlike the water lilies, which float on the water, wisteria is a climbing plant that creates cascades of flowers and leaves, offering a different perspective for the study of colour variations and forms. The works devoted to wisteria show a tendency towards greater abstraction than some of his earlier works. The artist concentrated on rendering masses of colour and texture rather than on detailed representation. The brushstrokes become freer and more gestural, as if to capture the movement and vibrant energy of the light filtering through the dense vegetation.
