"Wild Horses in the Tombolo Pine Forest" is a significant work by Giovanni Fattori. Although no precise date is known for all of Fattori's paintings bearing this title, he returned to the theme of the Tombolo pine forest (between Pisa and Livorno) on several occasions, often in small panel formats, and in some etchings.
In this work, the artist probably intended to celebrate the beauty and stillness of a place dear to him, conveying a deep sense of peace and harmony. The maritime pines stand out with their sturdy forms and powerful volumes created by patches of colour, crossed by two mighty horses, beneath a sky that may take on the hues of twilight or of a moment of natural calm.
